In a not-so-recent patch, Blizzard increased the background FPS of World of Warcraft from ~4 to 30. They also changed it so this FPS will take effect when the window is not in focus. Previously, it only activated when minimized. There are many potential reasons to be unsatisfied with the first change. Lets say you have a weak computer and can’t multitask with WoW anymore.

To change the background FPS, you may either change the maxfpsbk value in the config.wtf file or with a line of text in-game.

Type
/console maxfpsbk 8
to set the maximum background FPS to 8. This can be any integer, so you can set it higher than 30 if you wish.
(Note: It cannot be set lower than 8. If you try to set it lower than 8, it will still run at 8.)

Valve’s Portal

Portal is a first person action puzzle game. If you haven’t already seen the trailer, here’s a link. Most things about the game are positive. The story, the characters, the concept, the portal gun, the seamless portals, the puzzles, the music, and the creepiness are great. Unfortunately the game is too short.

Team Fortress 2 and Half Life 2: Episode 2, also in the “Orange Box”, did not grab me and make me want to know more like Portal did. I hope to see more expansion with mods and maps with the current version of the game. I also hope that Valve will start working on Portal 2. They should make the game last a bit longer, but other than that, they should keep doing what they’re doing with the game.
